Founder of GEMS leaves solid legacy behind
The Board of Trustees of the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) announced the resignation of Dr Eugene Watson, Principal Officer and founder of the Scheme.
Dr Watson will be leaving GEMS in the next few months to take up a senior position in another organisation.
Mr Zava Colbert Rikhotso, Chairperson of GEMS, expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the Board of Trustees to Dr Watson for his strong leadership and dedication. "Dr Eugene Watson has been an integral part of GEMS since its inception eight years ago. He has lead GEMS through its formative years into becoming South Africa's fastest growing and most successful medical scheme. His attention to detail, free and frank advice and high quality reporting has had a decisive effect on the efficient functioning of the Scheme throughout its challenging, formative years. His pro-active guidance and insights have furthermore assisted the Board to effectively fulfil its fiduciary duties."
"Under the aegis of Dr Watson GEMS has without doubt rewritten the rules of healthcare funding in South Africa. At present the Scheme covers more than 1.7 million beneficiaries, which represents approximately 3% of the South African population and 20% of the healthcare funding market."
"While Dr Watson will be sorely missed by his colleagues, the Board of Trustees and the greater healthcare industry, he leaves a proud legacy and a solid foundation on which we can continue building," added Rikhotso.
He concluded by saying that the Board of Trustees had a sound succession policy and plan in place, which will be implemented whilst a formal recruitment process is underway.
