World Glaucoma Week  9 - 15 March 2014 >

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve of the eye. Every year glaucoma causes large numbers of people to go blind. In fact, after cataracts, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in South Africa. According to the South African Glaucoma Society (SAGS), 90% of affected people in developing countries and 50% in the developed world are not aware that they have the condition.

In addition, an estimated 6.3 million South Africans live with high blood pressure, which makes them prime candidates for heart attacks and strokes. Most sobering of all these figures, however, is the fact that 80% of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by making certain lifestyle changes.

World TB Day - 24 March 2014 >

When Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) member, Carol Mashigo* contracted TB last year, she knew that her disease was curable if she followed her doctor's instructions correctly and took her TB medication every day until she finished her whole course. Unfortunately many people do not take their medication properly and are at risk of developing a dangerous strain of TB known as drug-resistant TB, which can be very difficult to treat.
