Medical cover for members stationed or travelling abroad


Want to travel overseas? If you are planning a trip abroad remember it is unwise to visit another country without healthcare insurance which will ensure that you are not left out of pocket or with a very high bill to settle should something go wrong.

Please consider the following before heading off to foreign destinations.

  • Claims must be submitted to GEMS within four months.
  • Ensure that GEMS is informed in the event of hospitalisation.
  • Complete the international travel claim form and submit it along with the appropriate invoices.
  • In line with GEMS Rules, claims are settled in South African
  • Rands in accordance with the exchange rate at the time
    of treatment.
  • GEMS will not pay more for a service rendered outside the borders of South Africa than an equivalent South
    African claim.
  • Accounts rendered in foreign languages, i.e. languages other than the 11 official South African languages, cannot
    be processed unless accompanied by an acceptable
    translation thereof.

If any of these conditions are not met or any of the documents are not provided, the claim will be rejected and returned to you. This may cause a delay in the processing of your claim, with the risk that it will not be paid on time.
