CSI projects undertaken in 2011

Caring about our communities is important to the Scheme. As an industry leader, we are passionate about playing our part in securing a bright future for all South Africans.

The dedicated and passionate CSI team, which has the entire support of the Scheme behind its efforts, consists of representatives from each department of GEMS.

The Scheme's CSI projects are spread across a variety of areas across the country. Every year the CSI team receives requests from members of the public to address a variety of needs. These requests can range from the sponsorship of soccer kits for primary schools to hospice and school renovations and buying groceries for needy institutions.

The Scheme engaged in various Corporate Social Investment initiatives during 2011.

  • The Daluxolo Primary School received a donated computer plus accessories from GEMS.
  • The Khalipha School for children with special needs also received six computers, screens, keyboards, desk shelves to accommodate the new computers as well as software in order to ensure the maximum capacity and use of the equipment.
  • Itireleng Projects received stationery and office equipment including a fax machine, computer, printer, chairs, tables, a filing cabinet, gloves and dry dispensers.
  • Evangeli NCHA Drop in Centre received donated chairs and tables for their office.
  • An amount of over R65 000 was spent on renovations at Mabeba Primary School. This project coincided with the Scheme's Fifth AGM held in Polokwane.
  • GEMS staff members donated blankets and clothes during winter and these were distributed to needy children on Mandela Day.
  • Masizakhe Children's' Home, a rundown home for abandoned children, was renovated during August 2011 to coincide with the Scheme's fourth annual symposium. The project involved the repainting of the facility, fixing leaking roofs and generally restoring the home to a condition that was suitable for young children.
  • At the same time, Samaritan Home, a facility that cares for elderly patients received donations in the form of groceries from the Scheme.
  • Mamelodi Centre for the aged at Mamelodi in Pretoria and Modimo o Maatla Hospice at Themba in Hammanskraal received blood pressure machines, first aid kits, gloves, linen savers, face masks, thermometers, stethoscopes, and groceries from the Scheme.
