If you are receving a monthly salary from your employer then your refund will be paid via your salary. If you are a pensioner and are no longer receiving a monthly salary from an employer then your refund will be paid to you within 30 days of receipt of the updated subsidy from GPAA (Government Pensions Administration Agency).

The subsidy calculation is based on the number of registered dependants which a member has on their GEMS membership. The maximum subsidy is limited to 4 dependants with a maximum of subsidy of R3865.00 per month. The minimum subsidy for a single member is R1008.00.

The determination signed by the Minister for Public Service and Administration indicates that former employees who left GEMS on or after 01 July 2006 will not be eligible for the subsidy unless they rejoin. If you are an active employee of GEMS and have terminated your membership at any point on or after 01 June 2006 (i.e. including terminations in 2016) you will not be eligible for the subsidy unless you rejoin the Scheme. Please consult your HR Department to determine your subsidy entitlements and how your refund, if any, will be determined.

Please note that not all members qualify for a subsidy refund. Only members who received an increase in subsidy based on the new subsidy structure will receive a subsidy refund. The subsidy also depends on the member's salary level as members on salary level 11 or higher receives an all-inclusive package (therefor they are required to structure their packages for a subsidy).

Member's receiving a salary from level 1-5 on the Sapphire option is being subsidised 100%. Therefor no subsidy refund is due to these members. The Persal communication issued , stated that members who resigned from the Scheme must submit reconciliations and membership certificates to their HR to manually update the subsidies for the period of membership. Therefore members who resigned and whose subsidy was not adjusted backdated to January 2016 must request a reconciliation and membership certificate from GEMS. This reconciliation and membership certificate must be handed to their HR to manually update the subsidy information for January and February 2016.
