The importance of taking your diabetic medicine correctly

To manage your diabetes better and to improve the quality of your life, it is important that you take your diabetic medicine as instructed by your doctor. Taking it at the right time and in the right dosage and amount, as prescribed, will not only ensure that you manage your diabetes better, it will also help prevent problems that may lead to hospitalisation and avoid life threatening outcomes. Simply follow these golden rules:

  • Ensure that you take the correct dosage and amount at the correct times. Ask your doctor if you are uncertain.
  • If you develop side effects consult your doctor immediately, who will examine you further and advise what to do. Only a qualified healthcare provider has the right to advise you on what you should do. They may prescribe a different diabetic medicine.
  • If at some point you feel better, do not stop taking your diabetic medicine. This means the medicine is working as it should be.
  • Always store your medicine at the temperature stated on the packaging. Exposing your diabetes medicine to elements will reduce its effectiveness.
  • Lastly to ensure that your condition is well-managed, please use one doctor so that they will have all your medical history available to make informed decisions.

GEMS recommends that you use generic medicine, whenever possible, to treat diabetes. They have been clinically tested by medicine regulators and found to be effective in treating diabetic patients.
