Five kilometres in the name of freedom

GEMS gets behind Human Rights Walk

Thursday, 24 April 2014

It will be GEMS, GEMS everywhere during the Constitution Hill five-kilometre Human Rights Walk this coming Saturday as hundreds take to the streets of Johannesburg in the name of human rights and freedom.

As South Africa prepares to commemorate 20 years of democracy, GEMS (the Government Employees Medical Scheme) has thrown its full weight behind the Human Rights Walk, which will take place on Saturday 26 April 2014, a day ahead of Freedom Day.

The many individuals expected to participate in the walk will be kitted out in T-shirts and caps sponsored by the main event sponsor GEMS, South Africa's second largest medical scheme, as they commemorate the day that forever changed the destiny of our country.

Constitution Hill, which has a rich history, is hosting the Human Rights Walk in celebration of its achievements as a national heritage site. This day-long event will not only see all come together to reflect, engage and learn from the challenges faced by the country, but will also see South Africans from all walks of life put their best foot forward and pledge their commitment to the values enriched in the Constitution.

The freedom walk takes place from 08h00 and will be led by the MEC of Gauteng Economic Development in and around the bustling and trendy area of Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Participants can look forward to GEMS services on offer that include free wellness screenings, a member helpdesk, informative healthcare educational material, entertainment and a great deal of healthy fun.

Liziwe Nkonyana, Executive of Communications and Member Affairs at GEMS, is proud to be part of this symbolic activity. "Healthcare is one of the basic human rights enshrined in our Constitution and it is this right which is the focus of GEMS. As a medical scheme we are mindful of the unique needs of our members. It is our aim to provide all public service employees with equitable access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare benefits. This is one of the things we fought for in this country. Moreover, the Human Rights Walk espouses one of our core values of creating Healthier Members; we are always in support of active and healthy lifestyles."
