There is less than two days of blood stock in the country, instead of the required five to seven days, the SA National Blood Service (SANBS) said in a recent media statement.
The organisation had a serious shortage of blood and appealed to people, especially group O types, to donate.
The shortage was attributed to the closure of schools during the four-day Easter weekend and the inclement weather in some parts of the country.
Everyone between the ages of 16 and 65, weighing 50kg or more, leading a healthy sexual lifestyle was urged to donate blood at their nearest SANBS clinic, the help patients in dire need of it.
