Deactivation of practice numbers

The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) manages the Practice Code Numbering System (PCNS) as determined by the Council for Medical Schemes. Healthcare service providers are required to contribute an annual fee for the running and maintenance of this system.

From the 51 000 healthcare practitioners registered on the PCNS, about 5 000 practices have not paid their renewal fees, resulting in these practices being deactivated.

Before receiving treatment from your doctor, please check with the provider if their practice number has been
renewed. If your healthcare service provider has a deactivated practice number and you make use of their services, you are at risk of incurring an out-of-pocket expense or having your claims rejected altogether.
