At the heart of what we do in providing access to equitable and comprehensive healthcare, GEMS strives to make the cost of healthcare affordable for all members. By ensuring that your doctor prescribes medicine that is on our formulary (approved
medicine list), you can make your benefits last longer.
There has been an important change to the formulary status of Crestor® - a cholesterol-lowering medicine that blocks the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in the body. As from 1 January 2012, Crestor® will no longer be in formulary (i.e. it
will not be on the medicine list). Therefore, if you choose to continue using this medicine, please note that you will face an
out-of-pocket (co-payment) expense. The expense will be the difference of what the medicine costs and what GEMS pays.
Please consult with your doctor to consider a suitable alternative that is on the medicine list to avoid future co-payments.
We have communicated this change to all pharmacies and doctors. Your doctor or pharmacist can update your chronic medicine by either contacting GEMS on 0860 00 4367, sending an email to [email protected] or visiting www.gems.gov.za.
