You must inform GEMS three months before you go on pension so as to ensure that your cover is seamless. Advanced notice is required because the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) can take up to three months before your post-retirement subsidy is approved.
You must also complete the Z583 form and the consent form and forward them to us at:
GEMS, Private bag X782, Cape Town, 8000. You may also email these documents to [email protected] or fax them to 0861 00 4367.
After we receive the forms and the relevant documents, you will be transferred to a pensioner membership according to the date that you will go on retirement. Your forms will then be sent sent to GEPF for approval of your subsidy with your GEMS membership certificate attached. It is important to note that as a member, you have to pay your full contribution until the subsidy is approved. Once the subsidy is approved by GEPF, you will receive a refund for the months that you have paid. In summary, GEMS is responsible for your cover and the GEPF for your subsidy.
