This year marks the 26th anniversary of World Aids Day, which was first observed in 1988. It was the first-ever global health day, initiated by health ministers across the world who hoped to promote awareness of the disease and encourage an attitude of tolerance and acceptance for those living with HIV and Aids. World Aids Day is also an opportunity to remember the more than 25 million who have died as a result of Aids-related illnesses since 1981 (1981 - 2007), when the first cases of immune deficiency were identifi.

Approximately 15% of the world's population is disabled in one way or another and no less than a quarter of the global population is directly affected by disability through being family members or caregivers of disabled individuals. Human rights is something that we, especially as South Africans, should never take for granted. An important part of our country's history is the fight for equality of all people, regardless of race, gender, class or religious affiliation. But South Africa is not the only country which has had to stand up for the rights of its people. This International Human Rights Day GEMS encourages its members to become informed about their human rights and about the violations that are happening daily around the world and to share this knowledge with others.
