Are you clued up on cancer?

More than 100 000 South Africans are diagnosed with cancer each year. On 4 February 2017, the international community will focus its attention on this disease by observing World Cancer Day.

There are more than 100 types of cancer and they are usually named after the organs or tissues where the cancers form, such as kidney or breast cancer for example. However, some types of cancers may spread into surrounding tissues and organs causing them to also become diseased.

Cancers can often be managed and treated. It is usually treated by a doctor specialising in cancer called an oncologist. A range of treatments and combinations of treatments is available to patients today. These include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery.

You may lower your risk of developing cancer by following these helpful tips:

  • Avoid alcohol and using tobacco products.
  • Improve your diet by eating more fibre, fruits and vegetables. Also, limit your red meat intake and reduce salt and sugar intake.
  • Get more exercise and try to lose weight, as a high body mass index has been shown to increase your risk of cancer.
  • Always wear sunscreen and a hat when you spend time in the sun.
