As the end of the year approaches with all its merriment and temptations, GEMS members are encouraged to take the necessary precautions to ensure a happy and safe festive season. We also wish you a happy, healthy and joyous 2016.
With many people travelling this time of year, it is vital that you take every possible precaution to drive safely. This includes having the relevant safety-checks performed on your car, making sure everyone travelling with you wears a seatbelt, obeying the rules of the road and not drinking and driving.
As many of us spend long summer days on the beach, at the dam or around the pool, this comes with a number of potential hazards, particularly for children. Responsible adults should closely monitor children when they are playing in or around water. It is also vital to ensure everybody is equipped with sun protection, including high sun protection factor sunscreen and hats. Also remember to stay hydrated in the heat by drinking plenty of water. Alcohol, fizzy drinks and juice are not substitutes for water.
"Dr Joe", GEMS's multi-disciplinary team fielding general health-related enquiries from members, thanks all those who have sent in questions this year. If you would like more information about something that may be affecting your health, please send in a question. It is important to remember, however, that Dr Joe's service does not replace the need to see a doctor.
This is because a medical diagnosis, treatment options and medical advice can only come from a registered health professional who has examined you in person and is familiar with your medical history.
Dr Joe seeks to encourage members to get the most out of their relationship with their family practioners by advising them to communicate openly with their doctor and providing background information that can be useful preparation for a doctor's appointment.
Dr Joe is particularly eager to share knowledge that will help members to be proactive in making healthy lifestyle choices, which can help to prevent a range of non-communicable diseases.
While the holidays are a time for letting your hair down, please ensure that you keep safety at the forefront of your mind - for yourself, your loved ones and those around you.
Wishing you all the very best for 2016, we look forward to hearing from you in the new year!
Yours in Health
Dr Joe
