GEMS is committed to supporting the HIV/AIDS voluntary testing campaign announced by President Jacob Zuma on 1 December 2009. This campaign kicked off on 1 April 2010.
Every South African and every GEMS member should know their HIV status. HIV tests are voluntary and confidential and you can get tested at the GEMS wellness screening days hosted in your department or clinics. You can also request your GP to test you. We know it is a difficult decision to take, but to protect yourself and your partner, get tested and know your status.
The president also announced the following:
All children under the age of one will get treatment if they test positive. Initiating treatment will not be determined by the level of CD4 cells.
All patients with both TB and HIV, will get treatment with anti-retrovirals if their CD4 count is 350 or less. At present, treatment is available when the CD4 count is less than 200. TB and HIV/AIDS will now be treated under one roof.
All pregnant HIV positive women with a CD4 count of 350 or with symptoms, will have access to treatment regardless of CD4 count. At present, HIV positive pregnant women are eligible for treatment if their CD4 count is less than 200.
