As a GEMS member, you have access to a dedicated emergency line (0800 444 367) that you can call 24-hours a day, seven (7)
days a week. This number is displayed on the back of your GEMS membership card and must only be used when an ambulance is needed to assist with emergencies.
A medical emergency is when someone has been injured or suffers from an illness where immediate medical assistance is necessary, such as heart attacks, seizures or stroke, etc. An ambulance would be dispatched immediately to save a person's life.
Unfortunately, this service is often "misused" as a transport service by some members. This "misuse" can see members who really need emergency care not receiving the proper care when they need to.
It is not necessary to call an ambulance if an expectant mother is able to travel to the hospital without requiring the immediate lifesaving medical expertise of a paramedic. However, an ambulance will be needed for serious conditions of gestation such as foetal distress, placental abruption, haemorrhaging, etc.
