What is member claims debt?

Member claims debt is also called the member's portion in the medical scheme industry. The member is responsible for the outstanding balance of this type of debt.

What causes claims debt?

This type of debt is created when members use Scheme benefits when they are not entitled to them; these are members that have terminated their membership or are no longer employed within a public sector and are therefore ineligible to belong to GEMS. This type of debt can also be a result of an employer backdating a termination of membership.

What can you do to reduce members' claim debt?

  • Notify GEMS as soon as you resign from work.
  • Make sure your HR practitioner notifies their contribution and debt contact person when you resign.
  • Do not use GEMS benefits after termination of membership/employment.
  • Notify GEMS if you know of any abuse of any medical scheme benefits by people who are no longer GEMS members.
